Throughout this year, I've created several pieces that fall outside of my current series. These are small works, ranging from 6x6 inches to 11x14, on canvas and on paper.

Sometimes I use paper as a kind of “play space” during the creation of one of my series pieces - where I can play with color combinations or markings. Other times I keep paper on hand to use up paints on a palette when I finish a painting session. These often start out as a little bit of a mess, but at some point in the process, I begin to see a design form and pull the painting out of “play space” and bring it to a finish.

I also was the lucky recipient of a stack of canvases that a friend had in her storage closet, and decided to pass on. About half of these were 6x6 inches and on these, I explored my series concepts in a smaller scale, playing with shapes of the same size as those on my 12x12 panels but in half the space. I was really excited to see how these “cropped” segments of my Inner Architecture series looked, and they are a great way to have a small version of those larger pieces.
